BRETT HOME.

ALTERATIONS NECESSARY. appeal bt archbiihop. j SUM OF £4000 WANTED. References to the financial obligations of tlie Auckland diocese in regard to special activities of the Anglican Church are made by Archbishop Avcrill in his Lenten Tetter, published in the "Church Gazette." A matter giving his Grace much concern at the present time is that of making necessary alterations to the Brett Memorial Home at Takapuna. His Grace is very anxious to comment-# the work, and. get the necessary building done. In order to erect the dormitories and laundry, and alter the existing house, ao that it may suit the requirements of a home, at least £4000 is needed. '"Ihe public appeal for financial assistance for this worthy object did not meet with the response for which I had hoped," says the Archbishop. "Nevertheless, the work mtisfc be undertaken. It is very important that all the children should be accommodated in one home, instead of two, as is the case at present. "The home at Takapuna, when completed. will be admirably suited for its purpose, and the orphan and destitute children will be brought up under the best conditions possible. We do want financial help, and I should be more than grateful for any assistance towards the consummation of our hopes and desires." The bequest of the late Mr. Thomas Grainger left to Dr. Averill, as Anglican Bishop of Auckland, to administer, may eventually be able to contribute something towards the erection of the buildings at the Brett Home. His Grace says the first charge upon that money entrusted to him is contained in a. letter attached to Mr. Grainger's will. It will, of oourse, be carried out. Hi 9 Grace adds: "As the late Mr. Grainger expressed his willingness that some part of his bequest should be expended upon the care of girls, if I i thought fit to use it for that purpose, I feel that it is right and fitting that girls as well as boys should benefit by his kind thought for their welfare. There will be comparatively little money available from this source during the present year, and I would earnestly invite church people to contribute regularly and liberally to the upkeep of this home, as well as to the building fund, so that the home is not crippled with having to pay interest and sinking fund upon a large loan."
