"MARITANA."

\our correspondent "Music Lover"' takes exception to my calling- "Mar it ana" rubbish. , J 10 *' *leny that it is very tuneful and charming, for those ■whose musical appreciation is too shallow to cope with more serious stuff. But I maintain that it is not suitable for such a body as the Auckland Choral Society. Thin institution has been in existence for several decades, and one could reasonably hope that by this time it might have, succeeded in educating the public out of the "Maritana stage. Apparently this is not the ease. The work in question is no better than "Rose Marie"' or any of the other shallow and charmuig lipht operas we hear from time to time. Apart from »ny other cons 'd f>ra tion«. it lias so few good in it that its performance by a choral society is not desirable from the chorus point of view. The societv would do well to leave "Maritana" and other works of its kind to the Amateur Opcratie Society and pay more attention to oratorio. ORPHEUS.
