MATAMATA NOTES.

Xuki Boy (Some Boy ll—Chintz) formerly trained by R. E. Brown, has boon leased to C. Carmont. sen., and i« now being trained by the latter at Matamata. Nuki Boy has not been raced for a couple of seasons. After winning the Hack Cup on the second day of the Rotorua meeting;, Unoco developed a slight cold, and it is doubtful whether Cannont's charge will be a starter at Te Aroha. T(> Wliaka, who carried a l<i( of money at the start at the Matamnta meeting, is summed up as u horeo of moods. One day he will show heaps of pace on the track, and on another lie will run like a goat, He will have to improve in this respect to again carry the confidence of his trainer, R. Martin, and his connections. Ruby Dawn, trained by C. Carmont, at Matamata. who is to 'have her first start in the Waitoa Handicap, at Te Aroha. on Saturday, is a full-sister to Red Day (Day Comet—Ruby). This chestnut lias not been in long, and at the time of writing has not seen a barrier. On the only occasion on which he has raced in heavy going (at Hamilton ana Cambridge, in the Spring) Red Day ran into places. Cannont's charge is in the Champion Hack Cup, at Te Aroha. with the minimum. If the sting is out of the ground, Red Day is expected to , run prominently, as ten furlongs is considered more suitable than the i shorter races. The placing of Atapai is giving her trainer some concern. Six-furlong hack races are so few and far between that C. Carmont gave the mare a chance in the open six at Rotorua. Atapai went with them, but faded over the last bit. Carmont is now keeping the chestnut away from the course and givin" her hill wftrk instead. ° uPl' C- Rin? was in Matamata on Wednesday and performed operations for respiratory troubles on Oscar and Fiery Comet. It ie the intention of A McArthur to hack about Fiery Comet after the heals, but Oscar will be put into again in the course of a few weeks.
