BUT IT WAS NOT ENOUGH.
YOUNG MAORI HEAVILY FINED THEFT OF FENCING POSTS. Because lie failed to appear at the Magistrate's Court at Kaitaia some time ago, on summons charged with stealing 25 fencing posts at Takahare on July 1. Henarc Etaru, alias Henry Nathan, a Maori, aged "it!, was yesterday arrested on the charge by Detective J'ackham. Ileimru pleaded guilty when lie appeared at the I'olice Court this morning. Chief Detective Hammond said two other men were similarly charged, but tlieV appeared before the Court at Kaitaia when the charges against them were dimniMsed. Instead of appearing Ktaru sent the sum of .€1 to the Court, thinking that this \vas his share. The fencing posts had been cut up for firewood. Mr. Hammond added that Etaru had never been in trouble previously and that he was a good worker, employed at Henderson at 14/ per day.
Mr. McKean, S.M., fined accused £\. mid ordered him to make restitution of C 4 12/. in default, one month's imprisonment.
