CAPTIVE DEER ESCAPES.

LONG SWIM IN HARBOUR

CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday.

One of the spotted deer which arrived on the steamer \Vaitnnu. escaped wjie-i its pen was opened this morning, and dived from, the boat deck into tue havbon r.

The d<*er swam nearly across the harbour towards the swimming steps at the eastern end of Gladstone Pier. The services of the motor launch Matariki were obtained and the chase to capture the unusual visitor commenced. It lasted about 20 minutes, and even after the pnimal had been cornered on to the steep embankment under the wharf it took some time to secure it.
