DOINGS OF THE LODGES.

END OF THE VACATION.

DRUIDIC DOINGS.

The holidays are fast drawing to a close and after a very pleasant vacation the majority of the lodges are again resuming their meetings. At present attendances are generally small, but things should be back to normal by the end of next week. It is hoped that this column, which has been so well supported in the past will be of even greater service to the societies during the present year. To gain the fullest advantages of publicity, lodge reporters should remember that this column is the officially recognised medium for the publication of friend society news, and all reports should be sent to Bro. F. C. Pace, c/o tram depot, Epsom, the appointed representative of the United Friendly Societies' conference.

The Star of Newmarket Lodge U.A.O.D. held their first meeting of 1929 on Wednesday last, the A.D. Bro. W. Lang presiding. The attendance was surprisingly good, visitors being present from Eden, Roskill, Auckland and Wanganui lodges. One neMR member was initiated and several more are about to join. A grand Druidic farewell is to be given to P.O.P. Bro. R. Walls, who is leaving to reside in Wellington. Bro. Walls has been a great favourite in Auckland and will be greatly missed in the Newmarket Lodge. At the close oi the business an enjoyable programme ot harmony was presented, items being rendered by Bros. A. McKay, Corbett, Potter, Page, Lowry and Otter. This lodge has made great progress and has every prospect of another successful vear.

The Light of Manukau Lodge U.A.O.D. met on Wednesday last, January 16, the Arch. Druid, Bro. G. Stone, presiding over a smaller attendance than usual. Bro. W. Lang, the A.D. of Newmarket Lodge, was present and extended a hearty invitation to the Onehunga members to visit his lodge. It was announced that Bro. F. Thursby, P.D.P. of Light of Manukau. and Bro. H. Pollock, P.D.P. of Roskill Lodge, had been elected to represent the Druids on tne Auckland United Friendly Societies' conference. Both brethren were congratulated on their success.— Considerable discussion arose out of a letter frowi Grand re a deceased brother's estate and a Philadelphian lawyer would doubtless have been' much interested in many of the points raised. A pleasant social hour was spent at the close of the meeting, Bro. Robinson introducing several "exercise stunts" which tested the skill of the members, whilst musical items were rendered bv Bros. W. Wells, W. Wells, and A. McKay.

The Pioneer Juvenile Lodge U.A.O.D. met on Thursday at Onehunga. The Adult Superintendent, Bro. F. Hudson, presided and in addition to the boys, six members of the Adult Committee

were present. One new member was initiated and was warmly welcomed by the boys. It was announced that no word had been received from Devonport re the proposed visit, and the Superintendent was asked to write ana see if a date could be arranged for early next month. The outlook for this lodge is considerably brighter and everything points to a most successful New Year.

The Ancient Order of Foresters were very busy just prior to the holiday, as reports received since show. Most of the courts arranged entertainments for the children and all were very successful. At the Court Pride of Ellerslie, a very enjoyable time was spent. Bro. Lyon, P.C.R., kept the children amused with games and after nearly two hours' fun, the children sat down to supper. Having eaten all they could and consumed all the ice cream, the little ones anxiously awaited the guest of the evening, who turned out to be their old friend Father Christmas. Loaded with balloons, he received a joyous welcome, and after shaking hands with each child, he presented the gifts from the Christmas" Tree. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and great credit is due to the committee who worked so hard to make the evening a success. The court wishes to thank all donors of eatables, toys, lollies, etc.. and those who heln«'d in anv war.

Court Zealandia A.O.F. just prior to the holidays entertained the officers and members of Court Pride of HelensvilJe, who were the challengers for the bowls trophies, the Pelican and the Jamuna. The honours of the evening were even and after a spirited contest the visitors triumphantly carried away the Pelican to Helensville for the first time, whilst Jamuna remained in possession of the home Court. Well done, Helensville.

At the last meeting of 1928, Court Zealandia held its 110 th installation ceremony, Bro. Lepine acting as presenting officer. The following officers were installed: C.R., Bro. Jarrett; S.C.R., Bro. Mickleborough; S.W., Bro. Morey; J.W., Bro. Watson; 5.8., Bro. Meek; J. 8., Bro. Latchmore. The retiring C.R. is to be congratulated on the splendid progress made during his term of office. The results of mnch of his work will be apparent in the near future. The juvenile branch of this Court has been reopened with quite a good muster of recruits.

ODDFELLOWS' PROGRESS.

The result of the ballot for the Grand Lodge representatives aroused keen interest and a close contest was anticipated. All the candidates were well known aad had accomplished good work in the order. The result showed that Bros. F. Newbold, A. J. Guy and H. G. Adams had been chosen to represent the district at the next session of Grand Lodge, which opens at Nelson in March next. Bro. Newbold is the present District Deputy Grand Master and is keenly interested in all lodge work. Br<* A. J. Guy is a P.D.D.G.M. and also « past president of the United Friendly Societies' Conference, which body he ably represented at the Wellington conference. Bro. Adams is also a P.D.D.G.M. and the present president of the conference, besides holding more offices than perhaps any other man in the order.

With Bro. Adams work for his fellows in the Friendly Society world amounts to a passion, and his enthusiasm knows no bounds. All these three brethren have represented the district on previous occasions at Grand Lodge and their election this time shows that they still hold the confidence and esteem of their brethren. All who know the brothers will agree that the result is a just one and comes as a due reward for the many services rendered.

The first meeting of 1929 of Loyal Jubilee Lodge, No. 7446, Paeroa, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, wae held in the Returned Soldiers' Club, Paeroa, on Tuesday, January 8. Advice was received that the Auckland District Grand Master, P.G. Bro. Walter Gubb, of Tuakau, would visit the lodge on the 22nd. Arrangements in connection with the visit were finalised and an invitation extended to adjacent lodges. The meeting decided to convey congratulations to Past F.S. Bro. Walter North, P.G.— a former secretary of the lodge—who was married during the holiday season. L.M.P.G. Bro. W. Power tendered his resignation as L.M. and auditor, owing to the fact that his work necessitated periods of absence from Paeroa. Eulogistic reference was made to the services of Bro. Power to Jubilee Lodge and the order, and it was unanimously decided to place on record the appreciation of the lodge. Bro. C. Y. J. Gwilliam, P.G., was elected L.M. At the Auckland District Conference, M.U., to be held in Auckland during March two remits from Jubilee Lodge will be presented. The lodge had for consideration the proposed remits of M.U. lodges of the Thames Valley, these having been circulated by the Thames Valley Past Grands' Lodge. The annual Christmas, tree function was reported on by the secretary, P.G. Bro. J. M. Fox. Bro. Fox was congratulated on the success of his efforts.

An interesting announcement was made this week to the effect that a branch of the 1.0. G.T. had been started again hi Auckland. This order has a great history, and great satisfac* n will be expressed at the knowledge that once again the banner of the 1.0. G.T. is unfurled in this city. We trust that the new lodge will link up with the Auckland United Friendly Societies Conference, who will be only too willing to extend a helping hand. Good luck to the new lodge.

The Auckland City Tramways Club has held two excursions already this year. The venue chosen was Motutapu and on each occasion the picnic was a great success. Transport changes do not seem to affect this club, which is one of the finest in the Dominion and seeks to help its members in every possible way.

The Gordon Tent, LOU., met at Onehunga on Tuesday last, the P.C.R., Bro. Stewart, presiding. A feature of the evening was the installation of Bro. German as C.R. and Bro. Breeze as guardian-. An enjoyable hour of carpet bowls brought the evening to a close.
