SUGGESTION TO MINISTER.

REDUCTION OF CLASSES.

One hundred ex-itudents of the Christchurch Training College are out of employment, and some have never had eirirAivuient.

In making the statement to-day to the Minister of Education, Mr. E. H. Andrews, a member of the Canterbury Education Board, said it was felt that as they had signed a bond. tl<» men for five years and the women for three years, something should be done for them. It was felt they could b,e distributed at a training salary round the large city schools, in which there were very large classes, and round the country schools in which the classes had grown big enough to place the school on the border line of needing another teacher. These positions could be created as further training position and held until the students could gain permanent employment.

The Minister (the Hon. H. Atmore) said if the scheme suggested by Mr. Andrews was carried out it would mean an expenditure of £8500 for the Canterbury unemployed ex-students alone. There were three other training colleges, so that the cost presumably would be over £30,000 a year. Students gradually became absorbed and, although for many of them there was no immediate prospect at the beginning of the year, it must lie remeiiilx-red tli'"' had bc-u trained for a profession.
