Air King was second all the way to Vallar in the Kensington Handicap yesterday, but he had no chance with the winner, who when challenged more than held his own.

Sulla showed up in a race at the Dargaville meeting and yesterday li'? ran very fairly in the Kensington Hack Handicap, finishing fifth. He may do better in the shorter distance event to-morrow.

It is stated that Valkon has been sold to a patron of E. George's stable and may eventually be taken to Australia. It iB understood that Aussie and Awarere are also under offer to the same buyer, and if the deal is completed they will also go to Australia.

J. M. Buchanan had Brampton in tiptop condition for his Whangarei engagement and the Lord Quex gelding ran a great race. This horse is showing better form than formerly and it looks as though he will soon get a stake.

The Elysian gelding Siaosi has been racing particularly well on the flat lately and was one of the pacemakers throughout in the Whangarei Cup yesterday. He will be in great order to contest hurdle races later on in the season.

Mangani ran a good race in the Hurdles at Whangarei yesterday and it looked as if he might catch Ripon Abbey when the straight was reached, but the latter had too much in reserve. Mangani was giving him 171b and it was a good performance.

In the Huanui Hurdle Race at Whangarei yesterday Wenday's saddle slipped and that accounted for her failing to get into the money. In the last race she quickly hit the front and The Thorn just caught her on the post. She should show up again to-morrow.

Owairaka, owned and trained by S. G Lindsay at Avondale, was a starter in the Spring Plate at Whangarei yesterday and was one of the leadere before a couple of furlongs had been covered. He was eventually beaten into second place by Musaie, but all the same is a very promising maiden.

Sleepy Sol ran a good race for over a mile in the Whangarei Cup yesterday. He was soon in front and with Siaosi carried on the running to the straight, but the pace set was so solid that, he could not go on. The event was run, according to the official time* keeper, in —2.4 1-5, which is a track record.

Ripon Abbey made np race of the Huanui Hurdles at Whangarei yesterday. He was soon in front and opened up a break on the field, anil though Mangani made a great effort in the he had not;chance with Ripon Abbey. This .horse is very well just now and should be seen to better advantage later on in better company.

Though the fields for the most part were not up to the average at Wha-"| ngarei yesterday, some good racing was] witnessed. There was a very good' attendance and everything went through without a hitch. The president, Mr. R. O. Hosking, was indefatigable in Mb efforts to make the fixture a success, and also to see that visitors were made at home. The acting-secretary, Mr. F. L. Gunn, is to be complimented on his work. He had to-take up the secretarial duties ax short notice, but he had all the arrangements in perfect working orden,

The Australian-bred filly Lucklaine showed some pace in the Spring Plate at the Whangarei meeting yesterday. She has not been in comtnission any length of time but appears to be improving, and when she is thoroughly seasoned can be expected to do better. Tea Time was never further back than third in the Manaia Handicap at Whangarei yesterday, but at the turn for home ran very wide. However, he then put in a great run and got up in time to beat Awarere by a narrow margin. Awarere was made a very warm favourite for the Manaia Handicap at Whangarei yesterday. He was soon in front and was still in charge half-way down the straight, but Tea Time came with a great run on the outside and beat him by a neck. The race should improve Awarere. The Thorn has shown for some time past that he was likely to return to hia best form, and yesterday he put up a good performance in dead-heating with Wenday in the Parahaki Handicap at Whangarei. He was giving Wenday a good start as they crossed the top, but got up in time to dqfid-heat with her. Serang ran his best race for some .time yesterday when he finished third in the Manaia Handicap. He was with Awarere across the top and held his position till well into the straight, where he weakened a bit and finished a good third. Some seasons ago Serang was a good horse and on yesterday's performance it looks as though he is coming back to form. Vallar won well at Avondale and he put up another good performance at Whangarei yesterday by annexing the Kensington Handicap. He was soon in front and stayed there, winning very comfortably at the finish. The son of Valkyrian is a really good hack and more will be heard of him before the season is much further advanced. Frothblower was last when the field settled down in the Kensington Handicap at Whangarei yesterday, and he was also a good way back when the straight was reached, but finished very strongly and was third when the post was passed. The son of Quin Abbey appears as though he is going to be fairly useful later on. He was bred by J. W. Kemp and is a half-brother to Te Money. Desert Glow was last when the field left the straight in the Whangarei Cup yesterday, but along the back he soon made up ground and was lying handy in fourth position as they turned for home. He then put in a great run and, stalling off Papatu, got the verdict by a neck. Papatu was rather unlucky for if he had got a good run in the straight he would have been much hatrder to beat. Mussie got badly away in the Spring Plate at Whangarei yesterday, but once into her stride quickly made up her ground and was one of the_ leaders before the top was reached. When well into the straight she drew away to win easily. She has always been credited with possessing a good deal of pace, and by the manner in which she won yesterday she should be seen to adyaur tage in better company before long.
