RUMOUR OF RETIREMENT.
PENIED BY MR. ANDERTON.
BIBLE IN SCHOOLS QUESTION,
Speaking at the Gordon Road Hall last evening, Mr. W. T. Anderton gave an emphatic denial to rumours that he intended to retire, and declared that he would not only go to the poll but would top it. Similar rumours, he said, had been circulated at the last election regarding the Labour candidate, Mr. Yarnall, even -on the very day of the election.
On the question of Bible in schools, he declared: "In England they are fighting to take out of the schools what some of you are fighting to put in. Many ministers are going to gaol rather than pay the- rates that keep the Bible in the schools. Free secular education is tho policy of the Labour party, and, though I read my Bible more than many of the Bible in schools politicians, I will not see it used to teach children religious bigotry." Mr. Isitt's proposed scheme for Bible reading in schools he characterised as the. most hypocritical bill ever brought before the House and an insult to the Book and religion.
At the close of his meeting the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence.
