COUNTY COUNCIL AFFAIRS. A report has been submitted to the Tauranga County Council by the engineer, Mr. F. A. Stevens, who, In company with members of the council, has made visits of inspection through the district. He recommends that the road through the Hikurangi Gorge in the Katikati riding be treated with small metal, which could be obtained from the Athenree quarry. Repairs are necessary to portions of the road between Wairoa and Jmlen. Arrangements have been made for putting in culverts and repairs to the roads in the Upper Papamoa. Te Puke Riding—Metalling has been done to the road near Te Puke, which would, however, be better if arrangements could be made to have it scarified aad rolled, and a reserve of metal kept for maintenance. Maketu Riding.—ln company with the chairman and Councillor MacDougall the following roads which the Public Works Department request the council to take over, were inspected—Kaikokopu, i Tainni and Arawa—and it was decided to advise the Department that these roads require being put in better order before the council can take them over. It was resolved to put the crusher at Athenree quarry into commission, to call tenders for crushing 500 yds of metal and to request property owners to clear away gone from their frontages. It was decided that metal be obtained from the Te Puke quarry for maintaining the road in that locality. A report is to be obtained from the engineer as to what work is necessary on the upper part of the Rangiuru Road, and to notify property owners to cut back trees where they overhang the road. It was decided to ask the Main Highways Board to declare the road from the Rocky Cutting to the Otaimatua Station to be a secondary highway. It was agreed that repairs be made to Beach's Road. Some discussion took place with regard to acquiring a new grader and a 30cwt truck. It was decided to purchase an additional grader with tractor and a oneton truck. • The fire brigade held their monthly run on Tuesday evening in connection with the Handle Cup. Following is the result:— Fireman D. MacPhail 1, Fireman J. Downey 2 Deputy-Superintendent Snowden and Foreman A. Stewart equal, 3. Toe revenue earned by the Bay of Plenty section of the East Coast Mala Trunk railway for the four weeks ended October 13, amounted to £9837. The cattle, calves, sheep and pigs sent out of the district by rail numbered 6783. There were *.020 oatward passengers.
