SCHOOL BUILDINGS.

USE BY CANDIDATES.

DEPARTMENT DEFINES POSITION. PERMISSIBLE tJNDER ACT. Jhe fact that some school committee* in the Auckland district have refused the use of school buildings to political candidates to give addresses, has been a subject of discussion between the Auckland Education Board and the Education Department. Several of the committees took up the view that in a case of fir* the committee would be liable.

The Education Department has now drawn attention to section 117 of the Electoral Act, which authorises the use of school buildings outside of school hours under certain conditions, and under which committees are not faced with the prospect of liability in case of fire."

It was stated to-day that there are instances where schol buildings are not insured, and for that reason the Department has insisted upon a certain responsibility on the part of school committees to see, in the case of a building being used for other than school purposes, that a reasonable amount of care shall be taken.
