SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Birkdale Social Club held their weekly whist drive in the Birkdale Public Hall on Thursday night. The prize winners were: Ladies, Mrs. Smithson 1, Mrs. Benfell 2; gentlemen, Mr. R. Harkins 1, Mr. H. Cosnett 2.

As a final festivity for the winter holiday, a very jolly children's dance and party was given by Mrs. W. Marshall on Saturday at her home in Clifton Road, Takapuna. The large reception room was used for dancing, and was prettily decorated with streamers and balloons of all available colours. Amongst the guests were Mrs. E. Close, Mr. and Mrs. H. Symonds, the Misses L. Williamson, M. Deighton, B. Ellis, M. Barton, E. Spriggs, E. M. and H. Marshall. and X. Horrocks; also P. Horrocks, B. Ellis, J. Kissen, P. Deighton, M. Close, J. Richardson, W. Foreman, T. Yarnton, and F. Williamson.

The usual monthly meeting of the Te Atatu Women's Institute was held recently, but owing to a very wet afternoon tnere was a epaTse attendance of members. The president, Mrs. Paton, took the chair. Miss Ellis, who was to have given a demonstration on basketmaking, was compelled to postpone her visit on account of the weather. Only nece«>sary business, which included the discussion of remits for the annual meeting of the Provincial Federation, was gone on with. This being completed, afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. Pijacini and Mrs. Adamson, and the meeting was closed in the usual way. The institute gave another of their dramatic and musical evenings, which appeared to be much enjoyed by a large attendance, amongst whom were a number of visitors from Henderson.

At the annual meeting of the Tau-1 marunui Pioneers' Association, the Mayor, Mr. G. E. Manson, said he had been asked by the president, Mr. F. M. Carroll, to refer to the excellent work Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Brown had done for the association, and as a mark of appreciation of their services he presented Mrs. Brown with a silver rose bowl an<'. Ihe Manure wa Catholic queen carnival continues to create considerable interest locally and in surrounding districts. There was a good attendance at a social and dance held in the Alfriston hall on Saturday evening in support of the town queen (Mis 3 Helen Marshall). The function was organised by Mr. B. Peguero, assisted by Madam Aileen Frost and an energetic committee. Popular items were interspersed with the dancing, contributing artists being as follbwsSongs, Misses Mavis Gibbs, D. Nelson, Joan Everingham, Madam Aileen lrrost; elocution. Miss Connie Gilbertson; fancy dancing, Miss Diana Lodge. The dance music was dispensed by Kiddell's Orchestra. A dainty supper was provided by the ladies of the committee.

A very successful bridge and 500 afternoon was held on Friday in the bowlers' pavilion in connection with the Takapuna Croquet Club, with Mrs. Cutler and Mrs. Davies as hostesses. There was a large gathering of players, both games being keenly contested. The winners were:—For bridge. A delightful dinner party was given by the Associated Churches of Christ on Saturday evening, at the Penrith Reception Rooms, to welcome Dr. and Mrs. Buraham, of St. Louis, U.S.A., who are touring the Dominion, and are en route to Australia. Mr. T. J. Bull presided. Appropriate speeches of welcome were delivered by Mr. A. A. Creamer, the Auckland president, and Messrs. W. Taylor, R. G. Dick, C. Garrett, G. Moyle, H. Callam. and Mrs. H. Callam. Mrs. and Dr. Burnham both addressed the large gathering in a charming manner, and thanked those present for the wonderful welcome bestowed on them. The Waitemata Women's Progressive League held its monthly meeting at Mrs. Paul Kingdon's residence, Bayswater, on Wednesday night, the latter part of the programme being of a social nature. Dr. W. J. C. Wilkie. who presided, in outlining the activities of the league, mentioned that 112 families, representing about ">(X* individuals, had been clothed, and 7001b of sugar, 1001b of flour, 40 sacks of coal, £9 worth of meat coupons, 300 packets of rolled cats, and other goods were now being distributed deserving cases. The Birkenhead Residents and Ratepayers' Association held their monthly old-time dance in the Foresters Hall, Birkenhead, on Thursday night last. Although a boisterous night, there was a good attendance. Dancing was enjoyed until well on to midnight. Judging by the spirit in which every one entered the various dances, old-time dancing has come to stay at Birkenhead, and the Ratepayers' Association is to be congratulated in providing*a long-felt want iu the district.
