BASKETBALL.

MEETING OF DELEGATES. GROWTH OF THE GAME. A meeting of the delegates to the New Zealand basketball tournament at present being held in Auckland took place at the Y.W.C.A. last evening. Mrs. R. S. Mclnues. president of the New Zealand Basketball Association, presided. In her opening remarks. Mrs. Mclnnes welcomed the delegates and said that the main endeavour of the association was to get the game of basketball vniversa' throughout New Zealand. It was gratifying to note that since last year 1000 more girls had joined. A letter received from Mrs. Gordon Coates. patroness of the association, was read, expressing her pleasure at the progress of the association and stating that she would give the movement her support in every way. The annual report stated that although the association paid its way comfortably, not much surplus was being Addeil to reserve funds. There was an increase In the number of teams throughout the country, and the figures at present were as follows : —Wellington 93, Auck'and 68, Canterbury 53. Otazo 47, Southland 25, Hawke s Bay 47, Ashburton 14, Taraneki 7. * congratulatory messages received from all over the Dominion it was felt that slowly but surely the association was becoming a force in New Zealand and was of considerable benefit to numbers of girls who would otherwise have no outdoor sport.

It was decided that the next tournament should be held in Canterbury. YESTERDAY'S GAMES. The first games of the tournament were played yesterday afternoon, the results being as follows :— Southland 25, beat Tar&naki 7 Wellington 24. beat Canterbury 0. Otago 19, beat Hawke's Bay 9. Wellington and Canterbury did not give as brisk a display as expected, both teams playing carefully. At half-time Wellington i. - In t,ie second half Wellington briskly increased their lead by smart pausing. while their defence remained impenetrable. Against Southland, Taranaki, who are making their first appearance at the tourney, put up a creditable showing against their more experienced opponents.
