WOMAN LOSES £1 NOTE.
INSURANCE CANVASSER ACCUSED. MAGISTRATE DISMISSES CHARGE. As the sequel to the disappearance of a £1 note from the house of Mrs. Mary McGlynn on June 19 last, Harold Herbert Brassey, a middle-aged insurance canvasser, appeared at the Police Court on summons this morning on a charge of stealing the note. Defended by Mr. G. P. Finlay, Brassey pleaded not guilty. According to the evidence called by the police, Mrs. McGlynn missed the £1 note after accused had visited her house. A few days later Brassey and another canvasser returned and handed over another £ 1 note. Detective Knight said- that he interviewed Brassey about the matter. Brassey admitted having called at the back door of the house, but denied taking the money. He knocked at the back door, but receiving no reply he left again. Two days later he went to Mrs. McGlynn's house and handed her a £1 note. This was done because he anticipated getting further business at the house. He did this as he did not want any trouble with the company for whom he worked. Mr. Finlay said that there had been no allegation of theft until some davs after Brassey had visited the house. Brassey and another canvasser, purely by arrangement and design and for no other reason, decided to pay the £1 to the woman so that they would get some new business which would have brought in a commission of £1 10/. Brassey had been quite frank about the whole matter and as soon as he heard a murmur he told his chief about it. The magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, ctismis-sed the charge without calling upon accused to give evidence.
