HOKIANGA BAR.

PREVIOUS WRECKS RECALLED. MATE'S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. Following upon the recent wreck of the Isabella de Fraine, other instances of wrecks at the Hokianga Bar were recalled, and a correspondent points ont that no mention has been made of the barque India, or the three-masted scow Hawk. The India, owned by Messrs. Henderson and MacFarlane, was wrecked in 1882 inside the bar, when going in to load timber for Rockhampton, Queensland. She was in charge of Captain MeKenzie, the chief mate being Captain MacFarlane, while the bosun was Mr. (now captain) Ted McGurney. The India was totally wrecked, but no lives were lost. About 22 years ago the three-masted scow Hawk struck the bar, and had m tempestuous time, and a well-known seaman, "Barney" McDermott, and the mate, Mr. G. White, were washed overboard. McDermott was drowned, and his body was never recovered, but White, who is now a captain on a coastal vessel was miraculously washed back by the waves to the scow again.
