HEAVY-WEIGHT FIGHT.
Tunney Says A Knock-Out Is Improbable. HIS TACTICS PREDICTED. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) NEW YORK, July 24. The contest for the world's heavyweight boxing championship between Gene Tunney and Tom Heeney, of New Zealand, will commence at the Yankee Stadium, New York, on Thursday at 9 p.m. eastern standard time. This is equivalent to 1.30 p.m. on Friday, New Zealand time. The New Zealander yesterday sparred for the last time at his training camp at Fairhaven. He displayed increased speed and aggressiveness. He boxed two rounds with a negro welter-weight whom he had imported for the purpose of testing his footwork and the results were satisfactory. Leo F,lynn, formerly manager for the ex-champion, Jack Dempsey, criticised Heeney for his ineffective defence. He declared that the challenger was constantly open to heart blows. On the other hand Tom Gibbons said Heeney's attack and defence were certain to spell ruin for the champion. At Sp?culator yesterday Tunney omitted his training. He reiterated that he would fly to New York in a Bellanca 'plane he has already engaged. The champion discussed the possibility of a knock-out in Thursday's bout. He implied that it was not probable, but said it would be vigorously attempted. It is believed that Tunney will concentrate in the early rounds on Heeney's head and eyes after the fashion of Dempsey in the Chicago bout.
