WHANGAREI HARBOUR.
MR. FURKERT'S DECISION. MEMBERS RELUCTANTLY AGREE. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WHANGARET, this day. A proposal made at the Harbour Board's monthly meeting by Mr. J. D. McKenzie, that the board rescind its resolution approving Mr. F. W. Furkert's recommendation that the board construct a harbour above the sandstone reef, and in place thereof proceed with the construction of a harbour below the reef, where water for deep-sea vessels is obtainable without dredging, was not supported. Mr. McKenzie said the board was adopting a policy contrary to that upon which the ratepayers had sanctioned a loan. The motion was not seconded. Mr. J E. Holmes said he had hoped Jlr. Furkert would report in favour of the lower harbour, but he had not done so. The board had placed itself in Mr. Furkert's hands and he (the speaker), felt that he must abide by his decision, even though personally he did not agree with it.
