GAMES IN THE PROVINCE.

WAIHI. The firßt match of the Frank Poland Memorial Cup series was played on Saturday afternoon between Waihl (holders) and Piako, the home team winning by 12 points to 6. For the winners tries were registered by Thornton (2), Walters and Polley. Pilkington and Munro registered tries for the visitors. The game was played in a howling easterly gale, with rain making good football impossible. Reed, the Piako full-back, retired hurt in the second half, his place being taken by Williams (Te Aroha). The Matamata and Waipa Union representatives met at Matamata on Saturday, and played a drawn game. Waipa scored 9 points in the first two minutes, with a dropped goal by Shepherd and a try by Kay, converted by Quin. Matamata's equalising points came from tries by Fausett, Kgan and Hayes. With the exception of the first few minutes Matamata had slightly the better of the game throughout. The sets of forwards were evenly matched but the Matamata backs were the more penetrating. Quin played a beautiful game at full-back for Waipa, while Voaper and Story were the best attacking backs. DARGAVILLE. Competitions were continued on Saturday in atrocious weather. Juniors: Maropiu 17, beat Tangowaliine 0. MORRINSVILLE. In a fast, thrilling game, Morrinsville successfully defended the Finlay Cup against the second challenge this year, defeating Cambridge .by 12 points to 5. The weather was fine, find there was a record attendance. The defenders were superior in the backs, and the. spectators were treated to a sparkling display of football. The forwards were evenly matched, and a gruelling struggle eventuated, with honours fairly even. For the defenders Anderson scored two tries and Harnett and Muicfthy one each. Dagg scored for Cambridge, W. Bourke converting. In the curtain raiser Morrinsville B beat Piako by 19 points to 8. CAMBRIDGE. MatSmnta B reps. met Cambridge B on Saturday at Victoria Square in bitterly cold weather, before an attendance of 250. The game was not a good exhibition of football, but was very evenly contested. The Opotiki senior Rugby representatives visited Matiita and played Rangitaiki for the Hurnnui-Apanui Shield, which the latter union had held all last season. Opotiki won by 10 points to 8. FuHj- 300 people travelled tlie 50 miles each Wi\" to see the match, and a very large cmwd assembled. The game was played in dull weather, and a strong wind was blowing. For the winners, T. Black scored a try and dropped a goal from the field, while C. Black kicked a good goal. M. Howel scored a try and kicked a penalty goal for the losers, P. Howell converting his brother's trv. The Opotiki players were carried fhoulder high from the ground by their supporters. Opotiki has now secured its revenge for last season, when it drew with Rangitaiki, scoring two tries to two penalty goals. TUAKAU.
