WAIRARAPA WINS.

DEFEAT OF HAWSE'S BAY.

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")

MASTERTOX, Saturday.

Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay representative teams met at Masterton this afternoon in fine weather on a good ground.

Hawke's Bay kicked off against the wind and sun. From a pass by Hart, Cundy obtained the ball and kicked. The Hawke's Bay back missed, and Cooke shot through with a great run. Wairarapa swarmed round, and prospects for a score were good, but the Bay smothered up. Fairbrother and Willoughby did good work in keeping up the attack, but a free kick relieved the Bay. Wairarapa kept up the attack, and another free kick again relieved Bay. Another free kick to Bay was followed by a passing rush by the Wairarapa backs, which gained considerable ground. Parker intercepted and passed to Cundy, who dashed through for a considerable distance to pass to Cooke, who got over. Cundy failed to convert. Wairarapa 3, Hawke's Bay 0. Wairarapa had had all the better of the play so far. Play now centred for a time, and then, with Hawke's Bay playing better together, offside play saw the game again in the visitors' territory. Play was uninteresting for a time. The next notable incident was a dash by the Bay backs, in which Huxtable was prominent. The football was straggly, and confined mostly to the forwards. The Wairarapa backs broke away, but Cundy hung on too long. Another Wairarapa passing rush was brought to an end by sound collaring. A free kick by Yates (Bay) and a pot by Bennett were the next incidents in otherwise uninteresting play. After a further straggly display, and just before half-time, Roache potted a goal from forty yards. Wairarapa 7 Hawke's Bay 0 The second spell opened with the game in the centre. A free kick gave Bay territorial advantage. The only decent piece of play of the game followed, when the Bay backs broke through, and Blake carried play to Wairarapa's twenty-five, by a good run and cut-in. Wairarapa eventually obtained relief by a free kick, play being taken near the Bay twenty-five line. Setford came away with a splendid rush, and placed Wairarapa on the defence. Two force downs were accepted by Wairarapa, | then a dash through by Cooke saw Parker drop his pass. Play was more interesting than in the first spell, but was still straggly at times. Bay was playing better football, and was the more aggressive team. Twice they were nearly over as the result of passing rushes. After a spell of desultory play Wairarapa attacked, and for some minutes the ball was slung about in lively manner, both sides participating. Wairarapa put pressure on, and kept Bay busily defending. Eventually the pressure told. Irvine broke away with a great rush, and, later, the ball coming to Jury, the latter dived over. Cundy failed with the kick. Wairarapa 10, Hawke's Bay 0. The referee ordered Reed (Wairarapa) and J. Gemmell (Hawke's Bay) off the field, following on some hot work among the forwards. Wairarapa kept up the attack, and eventually Cundy made a splendid run to score. He failed \*ith the kick, and the bell went leaving Wairarapa victors. Wairarapa 13 Hawke's Bay 0 GAMES IN THE SOUTH.

Early in the first spell Wanganui were awarded three free kicks in succession in handy positions and McLean, James and Carlton each had shots but missed. Taihape gained their first try from a forward rush in which their backs took a turn, and Bellis finished off the movement and Collier goaled. , _ , _ While on the attack Wanganui obtained a free and McLean sent the ball over. Just before the end of the spell Collier added three more points for his side from a penalty. Wanganui made several attempts in the second spell to wipe off the deficit, but the movements always lacked finish. Tilley goaled from a penalty well out.
