ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Onehunga Borough' Council met last night, there being present: Messrs. W. C. Coklieutt (Mayor), H. Stonpe, H. Campling, J. Carlton, W. C. Hill, P. R. Lipscombe, R. G. Speight, F. S. Morton, T. Moor ajnd E. Morton.

New Member.—Mr. F. S. Morton, the newly-elected member was welcomed by tbe Mayor.

Finance. —The general fund was reported to be in debit £1235 7/11. All "the loan accounts are in credit. Accounts amounting to £794 were paased for payment.

Seddon Memorial College.—Application was made for an annual donation for improving the supply of apparatus. Mr. R. G. Speight said he was a member of the college board and would like to help them, but, as a matter of principle, he could not vote -the ratepayers' money to this object. The Mayor moved, and it was agreed to decline the request on the ground that it • was the business of the Government to find all the money required for the college pupils. Auckland Museum. —When the application was received for a donation for the support of the Auckland Museum, Mr. F. S. Morton remarked that many Auckland organisations asked the eurburban bodies •for financial assistance, but when the ■position was reversed Auckland contributed nothing to suburban organisations. On his resolution the application was declined.

W.E.A.—The council voted a donation £5 5/ towards the funds of the Workers' Educational Association.

Petrol Subsidy.—ln accordance with the provisions of the Motor Spirits Taxation Act, 1927, the council received the sum of £173 8/ from the Minister of Public Works, who stated that the payments would be made quarterly in future.

Tenders. —Two tenders were received for building two concrete retaining walls in Church Street, X. P. Baker £140 5/ for 75ft, and £135 5/ for 67ft; E. M. Reardon £48 and £42 respectively. The engineer's estimate for both jobs was £56. It was decided that he should do the job with day labour.
