TAKAPUNA BOROUGH COUNCIL

. .The Takapuna Borough Council met last evening, there being present a full attendance with the exception of Mr. F. Hawes.

Proposed Right of Way.—The Milford Progressive Association asked for information concerning the proposed right-of-way. which will give communication between Prospect Terrace and the Inga Road' embankment. It was reported that the -matter would be dealt with at next meeting of the Works Committee.

Telephones.—ln reply to the council's application for public telephones at store and the wharf (Bayswater-) the secretary, of the P. and T. Department advised that the question of placing a cabinet in the vicinity of the intersection of Victoria Road and King Edward Avenue was receiving consideration, but that the desired facilities at Bayswater could not be granted. It was decided that the Department be asked to recoi. iider its decision re the installation of a call box at Feaver's store as there is not a public phone in the whole of Bayswater, and also because the district fire bell is to be erected there.

Town Planning.—Mr. A. M. Seaman suggested to the Works Committee that the oouncil should invoke the provisions of the Town Planning Act to justify the refusal of a building permit for shops within a certain residential area, on the «aane lines, as done by the Auckland City Council, and that all permits for either lock-up shops or combined shops and dwellings should be brought before the Works Committee or the full oouncil. A recommendation from the committee that instructions be given to the building inspector that no permit be issued for either lock-up sheps or combined shops and dwellings without reference to the committee, and, further, that the council give consideration to the matter of defining shopping areas within the borough, was adopted.

Sheriffs Hill Road.—The ' Waitemata County Council wrote, u.lvising that it 1 toped that the maintenance of Sheriffs Hill would be undertaken by the borough council. It was resolved that the county council be advised that the necessary outlay had been deferred in view of the forthcoming loan proposals.

Blackrock Outfall. —An item in the engineer's report stated that the plans for the Blackrock outfall sewer had been forwarded to the district engineer, the Public

Works Department and the Marine Department for approval.

Contributions. —In recognition of the lectures to be given in Takapuna by the Workers' Educational Association, it was decided to donate £2 2/ towards the association's funds. A request from the Seddon Memorial Technical College Board for a contribution towards the cost of buying school apparatus was declined.

Flag Day.—A request that the date of the Ex-Service Men's Club's Flag Day be altered from April 28 to May 12 was granted.

Accounts for Payment.—Accounts totalling £1150 were passed for payment.

Hoardings.—The question of the granting of permits for hoardings was referred to the borough solicitors for a report to the next meeting of the council.

Grammar School Trophy.—On the motion of the Mayor it was decided to donate a trophy valued at £10 10/ for competition among the girls of the Takapuna Grammar School.

Football Ground. —Authority for the expenditure of a sum up to £10 for putting in order the football ground at Takaroto Park, was given. It was also decided to make inquiries concerning the lease of land in King Edward Avenue, Bayswater, with a view to subleasing to football clubs.

Proposed Life. Saving Shed.—The newlyformed Takapuna Surf and Life Saving Club asked that they be granted a piece of land at the foot of Sandens Avenue, on which to build a club shed. It was decided to interview the owners of properties adjoining the site, and to make favourable recommendation.

Overcrowding of Buses.—The council decided to draw the attention of the No. 2 Licensing Authority to the overcrowding of the Brown's Bay buses.

Rubbish Destructor.—ln reply to a question, the engineer said the rubbish destructor would be ready for use in about ten weeks.
