RAILWAY SIGNAL STAFF.
CASUAL WORKERS' POSITION
Immediate inquiries arc being made by tlio Prime Minister into the position in regard to casual employees now on the signal staff of the Railway Department in the Auckland district.
Mr. H. O. It. Mason, M.P. for Eden, recently telegraphed to Mr. Coates, stating that the casual employees were ulurmed »t tlie report that, on completion of works now- in hand, in about, one month tliov were all to be discharged. .\* most of them Were murried men -vvilll dependents. Mr. .Mason said that tlm outlook at this time-4if the year was very disconcerting, and he urged that arrangements should he mude to obviate any necessity of discharging the men.
Mr. Coates'' reply, received yesterday, whs: "Your telegram received regarding casual employees on the signal staff. I am Imviiig immediate inquiries made into tho position and will communicate with yon again later."
