NORTHCOTE MAIN ROADS

FURTHER CONCRETE PAVING.

LAKE AND ONEWA HIGHWAYS KXPi:\DITI RK OF £27..",00 PROPOSKD. 'I lie Northeote Borough Council last evening decided, on the motion of the .Mayor (Mr. A. E. Oreenslade). .seconded by the deputy-.Mayor (Mr. Harrv Weaver i. to apply to the No. ] i iitrict Highways Council fur approve .'' a scheme for the reconstruction in concrete of Lake and Onewa Roads front the War Memorial to the northern and western boundaries respectively. Reports submitted gave the estimated cost of continuing the concrete paving along Lake Road, for a width of eighteen feet, from the junction of Onewa Road, a length of 105 chains, with two shoulders, four feet wide, of water bound macadam, at £10,230.

A similar construction in Onewa Road, for 45 chains, of concrete paving, for a width ct 18ft, and two waterbound macadam shoulders, each lift wide, was estimated to cost £7200.

In addition, a new (iin water main was needed in Onewa Road, at a cost of £1000.

The Highways Board, it was explained, would not grant the subsidy of £ for £ on the whole of this work, totalling £27,430. The subsidy expected was £12,.'!i2. leaving a balance of £15,118 to be financed by the ratepayers. Computed at 7 per cent, the annual charge for interest and sinking fund would be £10,>7, and a rate of one •penny in the £ on the unimproved value (£2(>i;.2Bi>) would fully cover this.

With the exception of Mr. F. Wilson, the others present—Messrs. A. T. Mimii, I'obert Martin, \V. C. Ellis, I*. .1. Ryan itnrl C. 11. Johnston—voted for the motion.

Mr. Wilson considered that the ques tion of the maintenance, and cost thereof. of the two roads, should be more fully investigated before approving of concrete paving loan proftosals. The permanent formation of Onewa Road for the full width, including footbaths and kerbing and channelling, would require an additional sum oi £t5."»40. As this work would not receive any subsidy, the council deferred undertaking this portion of Onewa Koad for the present.
