DEER-STALKING.
AUCKLAND PARTY IK
WESTLAND.
A SIXTEEN-POINTER SECURED,
Mr. W. W. Livingstone, of Matamata, who was accompanied by Messrs. R. Farrow (WaitS.ra) and P. H. Saxon (Tatuanui), on a deer-stalking expedition to South Westland about a month ago returned to Matamata on Saturday.
Mr. Livingstone stated that deer were not numerous or they had been heavily culled, but what were seen were in excellent condition. The block shot over was 200 miles from Pembroke by service car and then the gear had to be "packed" 30 miles. The country was exceptionally rough, and bad weather was experienced. The peaks were sriowcovered practically throughout the stay. Mr. Livingstone secured an exceptionally heavy sixteen-pointer and the party shot another good stag which it was unable to secure. Messrs. Farrow and Saxon are still "in," Mr. Livingstone having to return on business.
Relating some of his experiences the Matamata sportsman said it was a very rough trip and nearly, ended in a fatality. The carrier, a young man employed for the purpose, got carried into a whirlpool in one of the flooded rivers and was well tossed about by the waters. Luckily he was thrown into some less turbulent
waters and was able to reach the bank. A journey of ten miles through dense bush then had to be made for "tucker."
Among the stalkers met going in was an Englishman who had his own private retinue and a man who had continued on from a shooting expedition in Tibet. "It is remarkable where they all assemble from," said Mr. Livingstone. '"One meets them from all parts of the world."
