HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated March 31, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Apples:—The condition of both the Tainui and Northumberland shipments was generally good. The fruit was sound and the appearance excellent, except for some waste Tn Worcester Pearmains, which arrived fully ripe, and a little pit in Cox's Orange. The market opened with a fair demand, but trade is dull now and prices have declined. Opening rates were:—Cox's Orange, 25/ to 35/ a case; others, 14/ to 18/. Current prices are:—Cox's Orange, 20/ to 25/ a case; Dunn's Favourite'. 15/ to 16/; Ribston Pippin, Alfriston, Wolseley, London Pippin, 14/ to 16/; Worcester Pearmain, Gravensteins, 13/ to 15/. _ Wool. —The sales closed on Thursday. There was keen, well-sustained competition from the Home trade and the Continent throughout the series, with welcome support from America in crossbred, the excellent selection of which enabled a thorough test of values. Compared with the closing rates at the last series rates for Merino wgre on par to 5 per cent higher; fine crossbred, 5 per cent to 7% per cent higher; medium and coarse crossbred, 74 per cent to 10 per sent higher. Average closing rates were:—6o's to 64's super, 2/4 to 2/6 per lb; average, 1/10 to 2/2; 56's to 58*s, 2/4 to 2/6; 48's to 50's, 1/10 to 2/1; 44's to 46's, 1/8 to 1/9% 36's to 40's, 1/6 to 1/7%. The total offerings were 128,000 bales, of which 110,000 were sold, the Continent taking 60,000, America 4000 and the Home trade 46,000. The closing position was sound, with a genuine consuming demand. Hemp—The Manila market was firm early this week, but cased under heavy | receipts and freer offerings, closing dull. | "J" grade, March-May and April-June shipments are quoted at £38 sellers. The sisal market is quiet. Prices for afloat fco. 1 are £36 10/ to £37, and for No. 2 £34 10/ to £35; March-May shipments unchanged. New Zealand met little inquiry. Small business has been done in May-June shipments of highpoints at £32, and fair £20 10/. Nominal closing values are:—Highpoints, £31 10/; fair, £29 10/; common, £28 10/; rejected, £27 10/. Tow, second grade, £20; third grade, £18 10/. Stocks in London on i ebruary 29 were 68 tons, against 18 tons at the corresponding time last year. Tallow.—No auctions this week. Owing to shortage of supplies buyers are interrated in afloat parcels, but little business has been done, as sellers have increased prices. Spot quotations are unchanged.

Deliveries, New Zealand, this week, 1400 tons; in store, this week, 860 tons. Australian: Finest salted, 162/ to 166/ (164/ to 168/); unsalted, 162/ to 166/ (166/ to 168/). Argentine: Finest unsalted, 168/ to 162/ (160/' to 164/). Danish: Spot, 192/ to 196/. Dutch creamery. Unsalted. 186/ to 188/ (186/ to 188/). Estonian: Salted and unsalted, -180/ to 184/. Cheese. —New Zealand: White and coloured, 98/ to 99/ to 100/ (99/ to 100/). Canadian: Finest white, 108/ to 112/ (106/ to 110/); coloured, 104/ to 106/ (104/ to 106/). Market slow. English finest, farmers (scarce), 135/ to 138/ (133/ to 135/); retail prices unchanged.
