NARROW ESCAPE
Submarine Rammed By
Cruiser.
NOBODY INJURED.
LONDON, March 23,
A British submarine, R4, had a narrow escape • during exercises in the English Channel. She was struck, while she was submerged, by the destroyer Thruster. Her periscope was carried away and part of her bridgework was damaged. At the time of the accident the submarine was coming to the surface after a dive of 40ft. She rose right beneath the destroyer to her periscope depth, and bad she come a foot or two nearer to the surface she would probably have been sunk.
' Nobody was injured. The vessel was assisted to return to Portsmouth. The naval authorities are reticent, but a British official wireless message says the Admiralty announces that the damage to the submarine / appears to be confined to both her periscopes and one periscope standard.
