MALICIOUS TAMPERING.
CROSSING WARNING BELLS
PREVENTED FROM RINGING.
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A new and nerious danger for motor ists has presented itself.
The Railway Department reports that within the past few months warning bells and signals at level crossings have been tampered with, the effect in some cases being to render the devices almost useless. The latest instance, which is about the sixth that has occurred within the past few months, was discovered at the crossing at Roxton Terrace, Fendalton, this morning. A revolving arms signal, with bells, was installed there about eighteen months ago, but this morning three small pieces of wood were found inside the mechanism placed in such a way as to stop the bells ringing.
