CIVIC AT HOME.

DISTINGUISHED VISITORS WELCOMED.

The Town Hall was a bower of greenery to welcome to the city the Eight Hon. Mr. Amery, Mrs. Amcry and party last evening, when an At Home for the citizens took place. The whole of the vast room was embowered in nikau palms, which rose in. graceful majesty along the edge of the gallery and were looped to the opposite gallery with lines of lycopodium which also was used as streamers along the sides of the gallery all lit with myriads of coloured fairy liglits. The stage was a wonderful sight, with hundreds of nikau palms, and pot plants in tubs massed at the back, with a glowing golden centre like a miniature cave. The stage was covered with a brilliant carpet of the gayest and finest large calceolarias from a hothouse, ranging in colour from the deepest wine to the most golden and palest yellows, and in the centre a display of orchids, beautifully in flower, making a carpet of j loveliness. The whole was lit by myriads of fairy lamps scattered through the greenery, looped round the walls, and suspended from the roof in streamers and clusters of glowing and different coloured festoons. At the end of th© hall there was a design in moonlight bulbs, and on the walls were long mirrors with massed flowers at their bases. The entrance to the hall, where the official party entered, was made of rustic work, covered with lycopodium and misty with a rosy ruby light from the fairy bulbs, while the outside was also ' done in rustic work, and over it hung ; the draped Union Jack.
