The Hamilton land agent's assistant, William Harold Melville Taylor, who was yesterday remanded at Hamilton, on bail of £1000, charged with the thefit of a mailbag and contents, the property of the Postmaster-General, was brought to Auckland this morning on the Limited express.
In fixing bail yesterday in one surety of £500 and two others of £250 each, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, 6.M., mad© a special condition that Taylor was to report himself daily to the police.
As Taylor arrived here under escort this morning and was taken to the police station, afterwards going down to
the Police Court, it would appear that he had not yet secured the necessary sureties. However, it was understood yesterday that ihe was to get Ms liberty.
Taylor did not appear at the Police Court this morning, although he was in the prisoner's room. From the court he was taken in the van back to the police station, 'but he did not stay longer than a minute there. He was returned to the prison van and taken away, presumably to Mount Eden gaol.
