PONSONBY'S EASY WIN
GRAB-TON ATHLETICS OUTPOINTED
The game between Ponsonby, who hold a particularly strong position on the championship ladder, and Grafton Athletics, played on Carlaw Park, was a foregone conclusion, although Athletics put up a stern fight against heavier opponents. Grafton Athletics were aggressive from the word go, and within two minutes' of the commencement Angelo, their second fiveeighths, receiving a crisp pass from Lucas iu the goal mouth, side-stepped several opponents cleverly, and slipped across under The posts. Lucas added the minor points. The bluee rushed operations to the opposite end of the neld, where Delgrotsso following a passing bout scored wide out. ; A beautiful kick by Gardiner raised tl«e flags. When next Athletics were within striking distance, the blues were penalised, and LongviUe placed a nice goal from a convenient angle. Moments later, Gardiner again made the scores level, seven points all, with a penalty shot from outside the twenty-five. Athletics defence was found wanting when T. Peckham sent his chain away, to get round in time to accept a pass from Delgroeso. Running through, Peckham drew Longville prettily before handing on to his brother, K. Peckham, who had a clear run in. Gardiner goaled.
The blues were now combining better, and Delgrosso went away through a gap to in-pass to i'agan, who fimlised the movement with a try. There was no further score at the interval.
On resumption, Ponies worked their way Into enemy territory, and passing between Grey and Delgrosso let the latter across in the proximity of the corner. Gardiner, who was kicking with remarkable accuracy, sent the ball soariug between the uprights. The next score—a runaway—was truly a Peckham one. T. Peckham broke away to turn defence into attack, and in pass for his brother Tim to race across under the posts The latter added the trimmings to his own try. The Grafton defence was now in ulxee-and-sevens, and Gardiner's weight carried him over. Before full-time was announced Delgrosso scored an unconverted try for Poasonby, and the final tscores read : — Ponsonby 31 Athletics 7 Mr. 11. McKubrey refereed.
