PROBATION FOR THEFT.

FROM CITY COUNCIL

Having last week pleaded guilty to stealing the sum of £33 5/ belonging to the Auckland City Council, Samuel Stewart Sharpe (42) was presented at the Police Court this morning for sentence.

Chief Detective Cummings stated that Sharpe, while a clerk in the traffic department had received 133 license fees of 5/ each and had converted them to his own use. Since last week he had made full restitution.

"The matter is really a serious one, hut I believe in this case that Sharpe took the money expecting to get some money from England, but it did not come to hand," said the magistrate. "The probation officer's report about him is quite satisfactory, and" I understand that he told the town clerk what he had done."'

The chkf detective said that this was so. The auditor first discovered the shortages in cash and when accused of the thefts, Sharpe frankly admitted them.

"I understand that it was the other way about," said Mr. Hall Skclton, who appeared for accused.

Sharpe was placed on probation for a period of two years.
