GELIGNITE SEIZED.

RAID BY DETECTIVES.

IN GREY STREET YESTERDAY "ENOUGH TO BLOW UP POLICE COURT." MAN AND WOMAN ARRESTED. "Enough gelignite was seized to blow up the whole Police Court to smithereens," said Chief Detective Cummings in that building this morning when he gave some particulars of a raid that was carried out by five detectives at a house in Grey Street at 7 o'clock yesterday morning. Detectives were astir early yesterday. Five of them quietly approached an old house, situated at the end of a right-of-way leading from the left-hand side of Grey Street, near the intersection of Pitt Street, and went inside. There they found William James Mclntyre (56) and a woman named Amelia Bertha Cooper (35). A considerable quantity of gelignite and fuse was seized, and Mclntyre and the woman were arrested. They appeared at tHe Police Court this, morning, charged with being in possession of explosives without some lawful, proper and sufficient purpose.

Another man kept them company in the dock. He was Frank Bailer (24), and he was arrested in Beresford Street yesterday morning. Bailer was charged with breaking and entering the shop of Richard, Alexander Hughes, 340, Dominion Road, on April 10 and stealing clothing valued at £43 14/0. Chief Detective Cummings asked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., lo remand both Mclntyre and Cooper until May 25, and Bailer to May 26. Mr. Selwyn Clarke, who appeared for the woman, Cooper, asked that bail be allowed in her case. # "Found with explosives, you know, Mr. Clarke. What about that?" said the magistrate. "So far I am not aware of the circumstances, sir," counsel said. Gelignite Thrown Out. Chief Detective Cummings: I will oppose the granting of bail. There are some very bad features in this case. While the detectives were searching, Mclntyre threw two tins of gelignite out of the window. This woman has been living in this house, which is frequented by criminals. "Now, then, Mr. Clarke, 1 cannot grant bail to a woman charged with being found with explosives in her possession. Probably she can remain in the care of the Salvation Army while on remand," said Mr. Hunt. Mr. Clarke thought that that would be preferable to gaol. The remands were granted. Mrs. Cooper was in the Magistrate's Court on Friday last, when she appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., and sought a separation and maintenance order against her husband. Serious allegations were made on both sides, and on the suggestion of Mr. Matthews, who appeared for Mrs. Cooper, the magistrate adjourned the case until Friday next to obtain further evidence.
