SOLID OBSTRUCTION.
STRUCK BY EXPRESS ENGIIE. [ ROAD ROLLER ON RAILWAY LINE. MOUNT ALBERT COLLISION. As the outward-bound express was due at Mount Albert station this morning a heavy steam roller w u endeavouring to cross the railway W at the Gladstone Road level crostiiie. It had been stuck there for a quarter of an hour, and a man had beeaaai towards the approaching express to wan the engine crew of the danger. S express, however, came on, but before reaching the crossing the engine driver realised the danger and commenced to pull his train up. As it was slowmdown the engine crashed into the roßer and carried it fully eight feet. Althonj* the engine sustained no damage, tit road roller, which was struck fair'in the middle, had its huge front wheel wrenched completely off. Some spokes n one of the back wheels were also broken. The express was delayed for over u hour, and it took another road roller and a three-ton motor lorry to clear the line. The damaged road roller was ownes by Mr. W. Rothery, a contractor, aid was leased to the Mount Albert Borough Council. The passengers on the train felt oalr a Blight bump when the occurred. The driver of the roller had left it when he saw the train approaching. Hβ states he was on the line some time before the level crossing wig- wag signal commenced to operate.
