A spvoro earthquake occurred yesterday at Mendosn, Argentina, "]HO miles north-cast of Santiago, the capital of Chile.
Seven persons v.oro killed an.l others were injured.
Considerable damage was done to property. In most of the residential sections numerous houses collapsed.
Fires are reported to have followed the earthquake.
Telegraph and telephone communications with the stricken area have been dislocated.

In the province of Mendoza the preat volcanic peak of Aconcagua, the highest in America, rises to 22.427 feet on its north-west frontier. The township of Mendoza, the scene of the disaster reported to-day, is a").') miles north-west of IJuenos Avres. on the ttan.s-contincntal railway. In ]Siil an earthquake totally destroyed the old town (founded in l.Vtf) and 13,000 of its 14.Gnu inhabitants perished. Many of the ruins of the old town v ere visible in the larger eitv which grew up on its site. The population of the new town to-day is about 23,900.
