HOBSON BAY LAKE.

{To the Editor.) Sir, —The officials who are responsible for the efficient working of the city sewerage at the Orakei outlet, will be well advised to give serious consideration to the proposed scheme for turning Hobson Bay into a lake, thereby destroying the value of the tidal effect on the "disposal of the sewer refuse. Even now there is a deposit of sewer silt right along the Orakei waterfront and over Hobson Bay, caused by the eastern tide deflector. At the flush of the ebb tide this deflector causes a six knot" current towards the North Shore; at the same time the boats moored off Orakei, Hobson Bay and Judge's Bay are swinging up the harbour, a very sure proof that the tidal currents are travelling in circles. To construct an efficient sea wall as suggested would cost £25,000. It would serve no useful purpose, but would only further disfigure the bay and destroy the value of the waters for the boating community. If the city has money to spend, surely it is better to apply it to some useful undertaking, such as a reduction of the rates. —I am, etc., JOKN T L. BRETT.
