Mr. 0. E. Gook, manager of the "Waitomo Caves, in an official report to the Tourist Department states that, after making an inspection of the Kawaroa Caves (near Kawhia) he is of opinion they are worthless as a tourist attraction. The burial cave, which was described as containing a collection of skeletons, the mummies of a man and woman and a very valuable mere or tiki could not be discovered, nor did the beautiful stalactite formations which the main caves were reported to contain materalise. A glowworm chamber with glowworms of the same species as those at Waitomo was inspected, but their light was poor. The report concludes that the descriptions of Kawaroa had evidently been based upon hearsay and the Maori landowners had been misled in the matter.
