AMUSEMENTS.

MUNICIPAL CONCERTS.

The usual Municipal Concert was given in the Town Hall on Saturday evening before an audience of about 400. On this occasion Mr. Maughan Barnett directed the proceedings, and provided a programme .of organ pieces, violin solos, ami vocal numbers. The concert opened with John Sebastian Baclvs Concerto in G Major, consisting of the customary three movements. The two subjects of the Allegro were well contrasted by Mr. Barnett on the organ, aiid the double and single intervals on the pedals were easily distinguished. Effectively treated was • the Grave, and a fluent performance was secured of the Presto The same composer's Pastorale in F, and the subsequent movement in C Major, were delivered in a quiet and legato manner on the subdued registers, whilst lightly rendered was the Gavotte in X from the Leipsic Cantors' sixth violin sonata. Mr. W. "Gemmell came next with Valentine's Cavatina "Dio Possente" from Faust* which was expressively sung, as was also his encore solo, "It is Quiet Down Here." Mendelssohn's "Finale" from the famous violin concerto was given with freedom of bowing, and neat finger work by Miss Margaret Stoddart, who was also heard in Alexander's setting of two Irish folk songs. Mr. Barnett followed with a brilliant rendering on the organ of Liszt's Fugue "Ad Xos ad >alutarem," wherein the large-toned combinations and solo organ reeds were heard to advantage. Dupre's three versets, Durand's "Sous les liois," Kubinstehvs '"Wedding March," and Schubert's '""Am Meer" were other pleasingly rendered pieces. After his singing of Behrend's

"My Friend," Mr. Gemmell was warmly praised. The accompanist was Mr. Leo. Whittaker.

Despite the inclement evening, there was a good attendance in the Town Hall last night to hear the Municipal Band's performance. Herold's overture to "Zampa," Verdi's '"Miserere Scene," and Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" selections were the principal numbers played by the bandsmen, and Mr. Hal ('. McLennan contributed Blanchetau's "Sparkling Dewdrops" as a flute solo, and Messrs! Maloy and Bowes were the soloists in the "Trovatore" number. Mr. Christopher Smith directed an enjoyable pertormance. "SONGS AND SONG DEVELOPMENT." "Songs and Song Development," is the title of the lecture to be given by Mr. H. Barry Coney, L.R.A.M., in the Parnell Library Hall to-morrow night, August 24, at S p.m.

The lecturer will trace the development of song from the barbarous stage to the present day.
