A MAORI OVEN.
FIND AT WHAKATANE
UNUSUAL DIMENSIONS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. An interesting discovery was made near the borough quarry on Monday last of a Maori hangi or community cooking oven. Borough workmen, stripping the hillside for blinding, made the discovery. The hangi -was elliptical in shape, 12 feet long and 7* feet wide, with a depth of about 5 feet. All the cooking stones were rounded and were presumably brought from Whale Island. No bones or other objects than stones and charred wood have so far been discovered. The hangi was at first presumed to be of extreme antiquity, hut excavation supports the opinion that it was used only some 60 or 70 years ajn. probably by the Tuhoes of the I'rcwera on visits to Whakatane. The strip of land between the cliff* and Commerce Street from the borough quarry to Wahautarna Rook was at one time the site of a pn npmpd Wharaiirangi. Discoveries of silfh largo hanpi are very rare.
