RICH ORE ASSAYED.
MATA CREEK PROSPECTING,
BY TARAXAKI CAPATALISTS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
THAMES, this day. Some curiosity was aroused this week by the arrival and departure of a party of Taranaki motorists, who made their headquarters at Tapu, on the Thames coast. Until yesterday nothing could be gleaned, except that they were interested in mining and were prospecting iv Mata Creek, near Tapu. Yesterday, they arrived back in Thames and volunteered the information that they had taken up several hundred acres near Tapu for mining, also for sluicing in the Mata Creek bed, where once alluvial gold was found. They hinted that machinery of a totally new type to that on "the goldfields will be used, also that gold°was not their only objective. The names of the members of the party are:—Messrs. E. Hughes, F. Price, It. Scott, P. A. Openshaw. M. Mills, F. Baker, J. Campbell and E. Gilmer, all of Taranaki. With them is a Mr. McDonald, a mining expert, who knows the goldfields well and who is taking charge of matters.
Information was disclosed that they are members of a company being formed to develop mineral areas" which apparently are rich in ore, as samples assayed at the Thames School of Mines showed a return of £15 to the ton of ore. The visitors returned to New Plvmoutli last evening, stating their intention of returning at the end of the month. Plenty of capital is said to be available when required. Inquiries from the mining registrar show applications for licenses to work 450 acres in the district.
