Carr (Notts, captain), A. P. Chapman [Berks). J. B. Hobbs (,Surrey), H. Strudwick (Surrey). F. E. Woolley (Kent), E. Hendren < Middlesex^, J. \\ . Hearne ( Middlesex I, Roy Kilner < Yorkshire i. M. W. Tate (Sussex >, F. Root (Worcestershire), and H. Sutcliffe i Yorkshire). Sutcliffe's selection is provisional on hU being quite tit. Otherwise his place will be tilled by P. Holmes iYorkshire), with A. Saudham i Surrey) as twelfth man. The only professional member of the selected e!e\en who was not with ihe English team in Australia is Root, who was so suci-e-snil against the Australians in the North of England match. This is Root's first appearance in an All England team, at the age of 36 years. He had a woiiderhilly -successful season last year, taking l!ii) wk-Uets at a cost of 17.4 runs apiei-i? in the county games, and finishing tin' season with 219 wickets at an average of !7.2 runs, which placed him in the- r'a-s with Tate and Parker. There are but two amateurs in the side, (,'arr anil Lhapmau, and the former is another change from the side which was in Australia last year, taking the place as skipper which had been held by A. E. Oilligan. The inclusion of Root retains the balance of the English attack much as it had been expected to be for Australia, for he really takes the place of Gilligan in this respect. The latter proved a failure as a bowler in Australia, and did little with the bat. so that it is expected that Root, having proved that his bowling merits the greatest respect by the Australians, will make the home side a much more formidable one on tjjp home wickets than GilligrvrTs team was in Australia.— i.V and N.Z.)
