FLAGSTONES.
SECTION IN QUEEN STREET. COUNCIL'S EXPERIMENT. Aucklanders were very favourably impressed to-day by the new type of footpath that the City Council has laid between Shortland Street and Vulcan Lane, on the eastern side of Queen Street. The footpath consists of concrete flagstones, laid on a foundation levelled with sand. This is an experimental section, and the intention of the council is to observe the new type alongside the tar and sand footpaths, under the best test conditions that are obtainable in the city. If the result shows that the flagstones make a superior footpath they will gradually be introduced on all the main streets of Auckland. Certain advantages have been claimed for concrete blocks, because they give a better appearance and are easily removed and placed in position again when any disturbance of the footpath is necessary. A report that was placed before the City Council last year showed that a comprehensive scheme of flagstone paving would be a costly undertaking, and it has been decided to make careful tests before proceeding further. What attracted the attention of the public most to-day was the even nature of the now surface and the greater comfort it afforded. There was none of the irregularity that had become such a con. snicnous feature of the tfrred footpaths after a few disturbances to attend to water, gas. or drainage mains below the street.
