HIDES AND SKINS.
BETTER MARKET TOXE
There was a better tone on the hide and skins market to-day. Competition, from par, was |d to Jd for best conditioned, while second-grade and faulty found little or no competition. Calves and yearlings were on a par with last sale. Aβ far as sheepskins were concerned, there was not so much demand owing to the decline in prices in London.
The following prices were realised: — Hides: Cow made up to s|d per lb. Ox hides, heavy, 7d to 9d per lb; medium, BJd per lb; light, s}d to 6d per lb. Dry skins, three-quarter wool, half-bred, up to 12Jd per lb; fine crossbred, Hid per lb; medium, lid per lb; coarse, lOfd per lb; half wool, IOJd per lb; felts, per lb. Salted sheepskins, half to threequarter wooLs, medium, 5/3 to 5/9 each; large, 6/3 to 7/ each; extra large, from 7/2 to 8/3 each; a few picked extra large, 8/9 to 9/3 each; others at relative prices. Sheepskins, best butcher, felts, 5/ to 7/4; medium, 3/ to 4/3; dry, three-quarter wool, 10d to 12d; half wool, 9d to 10d.
The state of the leather market in Britain may be gathered from a report of the "Northampton Journal of Commerce" that imports of wet raw hides to England in February were much larger than for the corresponding month last year, while re-exporte had also been smaller.
