HIGHEST ON THE LIST.

S " APPOINTMENT OF EADY TEACHER. EDUCATION BOARD DISCUSSION. There was a discussion at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board this morning as the outcome of a letter from the Kio Kio School Committee (near Otorohanga), urging the appointment of a male head teacher to the Kio Kio School. Out of two applicants a lady teacher was graded 38 marks higher than a male teacher. The senior inspector (Mr. C. W. Garrard) said that he knew a number of women teachers controlling grade 3A schools who were rendering better service than men teachers. Mr. T. U. Wells said that some women teachers did efficient work, but that wa9 only one side of the matter. He questioned whether inspectors could sum up the influence of playground work. It was known that practices went on i amongst boys where there was no male teacher, and it was a reason why there should be a male teacher to keep an eye on tbe boys in the playground. The scholastic side was only one aspect of school life. The senior inspector pointed out that it was impossible in every case to appoint a male teacher. Mr. Boddie said that some ladies were probably better teachers, but it was of vital importance that boy 3 should have a man to copy, if the latter were of the right type. The senior inspector adhered to a previous l recommendation that the applicant highest .on the grading list should be appointed, and the board decided to appoint the lady teacher. j
