LOCAL ELECTIONS.

COUNTY COUNCIL POLLS. KEEN INTEREST TAKEN. The triennial elections of members of the country councils were held yesterday. The polling was good. The otlicial count will not be completed until Monday next at the earliest. The results of the preliminary counts are given below. WAITEMATA. Much, interest was centred in the triennial election of councillors of the Waitemata Council, held yesterday. There were seven contested seats, and in each case the return of one councillor only was necessary. The Returning Officer, Mr. C. A* Cawkwell, announced the provisional results shown below, which are, of course, subject to the official recount, which will be held on Monday next. All the sitting members of the council were re-elected, with one exception —that of Mr. R. Glasgow, of Taupaki, who was replaced by Mr. L. E. Kerr-Taylor, of Waimauku. The county elections caused more interest than'exhibited for many years There was some surprise at the defeat of two old councillors, Mr. Robert Coj for Puriri riding and Mr. Cory Wright for Tairua. The proposal to raise a loan of £930 C for the erection of new county offices was rejected. The votes -were 665 for and 617 against, but this lacks th* necessary three-fifths of the total votes cast to enable the loan to be carried Two small returns are delayed owing to a break in the line last night, but they cannot effect the issue. WHAKATANE. There was keen interest in the Wliakatane County Council election, which resulted as follows: — Tarawera Riding (two members): E. J. Witthans, 72; Harry Greig, 59; i Edward Law. 55. Rangitaiki (two members): Wm. McCracken. 84; Peter Baird. 72; Alex McLean, 33; Alfred Luke 19. Omataroa (one member): John' Pearson, 54; T. M. Lawson. 22. Taneatua (one member): Alex Peebles. 57; Thomas Mitchell, jun.. 44; Hayward. 37. Nukuhou (one member): J. G. C. MeCuUoeh. 47; F. J. Savage, 37. [ The following councillors were reelected unopposed: Crs. F. J. Burt, Walter Reid, W. H. Addison, also Mr. James Grant for the new riding of Galatea. TAURANGA. Katikati Riding: W. J. Gray defeated G. Alley. Tepuna: R. Francis defeated the sitting member, S. Steele. Waimapu: J. Darragh defeated F. Merrimnn: both were sitting members, but the representation was reduced to one. Te Puke: A. B. Morton and C. Lally were elected. E. L. Broad being defeated. Maketu: R. King (chairman), S. H. MaeDougall and C. Bailey were elected. F. Mundt and L. G. Harris (sitting members) being defeated.

HAURAKI PLAINS. Ngatea Siding: Mr. E. E. Walton defeated the late member, Mr. T. McLoughlin, Horahora: Mr. H. H. Hicks defeated Mr. Treadwav. Kerepeehi: Mr. A. S. Fisher defeated Mr. T R. Henry, Pipiroa: Mr. C. W. Parfitt defeated Mr. J. C. Neate, The following were elected unopposed: Messrs. J. C. Miller, C. AY. Harris, W. Madgwick, J. A. Reid, J. T. May. The proposal as regards the closing of the Wharepoa ferry was defeated by nine votes. This opens up a peculiar position as the poll was taken over the Thames County area only, whereas the Hauraki Plains Council, trie controlling authority, decided to close it. ROTORUA. The following were elected: South Riding: Messrs. H, P. Ford, J. E. Martin, Walter Steele. North: Messrs. S. H. Jolly, A. L. Keith, J. J. Smyth. WAITOMO. The following were elected: Aria Riding: A. Wilson. Awakino, L. R. Jones. Hangatikis T. Boyd. Mahoenui: F. McKain. Mairoa: R. Were. Paemaka: C. K. Wilson. Tangitu: J. Andrew. Te Kuitii S. Pratt HENDERSON TOWN BOARD. TWO MEMBERS ELECTED. The poll for the election of two members of the Henderson Town Board resulted as follows: E. G. Rountree, 167; H. Norcoss, 139; J. Kennedy, 1-1; S. Ozich, 103. MOUNT ALBERT BOROUGH. POLLING TO-DAY. A poll is being taken to-day for the election of one member of the Mount Albert Borough Council. Among the three candidates for the vacancy is Mr 9. Louisa Paterson, v ho is the first woman to seek election as a member of a borough council in the Auckland province. The candidates for the office are: Messrs. C. Opie, junr., J. Taylor, and Mrs. Louisa Paterson. The polling will be continued until seven o'clock this evening at the two {following polling places, the Jubilee Hall, New North Road, Kingsland; and St. George's Parish Hall, New North Road, Glenmore. HOSPITAL BOARDS. I MANUKAU COUNTY SEAT. An election was held yesterday for one member of the Auckland Hospital Board to represent the combined district of the County of Manukau, the Borough of Otahuhu, and the town districts of Papatoetoe, Manurewa. Papakura and Howick. The result of the poll was as follows: S. J. Harbutt, 898; the Rev. W. C. Wood, 894. Mr. Harbutt was the retiring member. KAIPARA. The following were elected to the Kaipara Hospital Board: —Messrs T. Bassett. W. Simpkin, J. H. McCarroll, W. Montgomery, W. T. Hunt, J. Sterling, M. N. Skelton. THAMES. Mr. W. J. Hall defeated Mr. A. Williams in Thames County, while Messrs. E. Walton, C. W. Parfitt and W. E. Hale were elected as Hauraki Plains representatives. TAURANGA. Messrs. T. Lochhead (chairman), B. C. Robbins, J. Hume, V. J. Scantlebury, J. H. McGhie and D. Grant were elected. Messrs. Colin McNaughton (sitting) and J. H. McKenzie were the defeated candidates. WHANGAREI. The election of six members to represent- the combined country and Hikurangi Town District resulted: A. J. Murdock, 669; P. Elliott, 60C; J. A. S. Mackay, 564; J. N. I. McKay, 561; T. Ellis. 527; E. Swan'n, 504. These were elected, the new members being Messrs. Murdock, Elliott, and Swarm. Unsuccessful candidates were: Jas. D. McKenzie, 443; J. N. McCarroll, 402; R. (C. Cherrie, 336; P. McKenna, 265. j HARBOUR BOARDS. TAURANGA. For the Katikati, Te Puna and Waimapu combined district Messrs. C. E. MacMillan, M.P., and W. F. Sinclair were elected, Mr. Colin McNaughton (sitting member) being defeated. For the combined district of Te Puke and Maketu Ridings and the Te Puke Town Board, j Messrs. D. Grant (chairman) and C. Lally were elected, Mr. W. F. Mundt being defeated. POWER BOARDS. ] WAITEMATA. The triennial election of county meml>ers for the Waitemata Electric Power Board took place yesterday. As anticipated, the fact that the Heiensviile Town Board franchise swamped the county franchise, the representatives of the Town District area had the advantage, and Messrs. Mackie and McLeod were again returned. Two new members were elected to the board, viz., Messrs. H. A. Robertson, of Swanson, and Henry Day, of Albany. There were 40 polling booths, and the polling attracted a great deal of interest. The Returning Officer, Mr. C. A. Cawkwell, announced the provisional results, which are shown hereunder. It is anticipated that the scrutiny of the rolls and the recount will take place ou Monday next. Fortunately for those who did not fare so well at the poll, they do not forfeit their deposit, as more than oneeighth of the votes received by the fourth member were polled by the unsuccessful candidates.
