DEVONPORT. The Devonport Borough Council met last erening. Thorp were prcspnt : The Mayor (Mr. T. Lamonti, and Messrs. J. Hendprson. K. Aldridgc. S. Walkpr, .1. Hjslo P . T. MassfT. \V. s. Campbell W. O. Marks and V. H. Ellisdon. Devonport Footpaths.—A lengthy discussion ensued on the report of Mr. Greville Walker, consulting ensineer to the borough, on the unsatisfactory nature of footpaths rpcpntly completed : Victoria, Tainui and Cheltenham Rnarls and Kins: Edward Parade. .Several councillors were insistent that the responsibility for this work should ho definitely indicated, but the Mayor contended that they must take the report of thp enginper. which stated that, owing to their multifarious duties, the borough officials were exonerated. It was decided that all defective work must be remedied before being taken over by the boronch. and that further footpath construction should be deleted from existing contracts, to be done by the borough staff. Hospital Levy.—The Hospital Board notified (he borough that its levy for the ypar would be £.143 15/4, an increase of £73 over 102.-,. Clean-up Weeks.—The sanitary inspector urged the necessity of another clean-up wppk in I lie borough. It was decided to adopt his suggestion of a quarterly cleanup, and special attention was ordered to be given to uncovered dustbins and the rat ■uisanc. Klpctrlcal Supply.—• The electricity department's manager. Mr. Sparrow, reported that the recent unsatisfactory ■supply had been due to mechanical faults. Testprdays failure of light was due to the accidental breakage of the oil pump. The agreement for amalgamation with the Waitemata Tower Board was finally approved for official signature. Tenders for Roads.—Five tenders were received for concreting a portion of Calliope Road, and were left with the engineer for comparison with specifications. It was also decided to call tenders for concreting Devonport's portion of the unfinished main road between Belmont and Old Lake Road. Rangitoto Island Domain.—The annual etatpmpnt of domain accounts showed a credit balance of £204. During the year £62-"> had been spent on huts for the men employed on the roadway scheme. £«5 on the children's playground and £123 on the Islington jptty and track. The engineer rppnrted that 50 chains of the new road were ready for binding. Devonport Domain.—The annual statempnt of the Domain Board's accounts showed the total receipts to be £Sf>«l !>/R. and outgoings £567 lfi/8. wages of £501 being the principal item of expenditure. Fire Station.—The Fire Brigade Committee souyht permission to purchase furnishings and equipment of the building. It was decided to call tenders for items required. Preliminary report was made of the fire alarm installation of the borough, and left for final decision next Monday night, when the estimates for the year will be considered. Sppcial Meeting of Ratepayers.—lt was' decided to hold a public meeting to explain current works and proposals to the ratepayers at an early date. TAKAPUNA. The Takapuna Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. D. Morison>, and Messrs. J. .Collins. G. Creamer. A. 11. Wilkie, F. E. N. Gaudin, G. H. Matthews, and J. W. Williamson. Scoria Pit.—A letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs approving the purchase nt a cost of £4250 of the council's scoria pit on Northcote Road, and payment nf the money by instalments. Fire Fighting. —On the recommendation of the Fire Fighting Committee, it was resolved that estimates totalling £5.i0 for brigade purchases during the coming financial year be approved. Subsidiary Roads.—A request from the Northcote Borough Council for support in obtaining a subsidy towards the cost of subsidiary ronds, which, although main roads, have not been declared main highways, was'granted. The Harbour Bridge.—Representatives werp appainfpd to attend the meeting of the Waitemata Harboair Bridge Committee to be held at Birkenhead on May 20. Reticulation.-—After considerable argument, the council decided that the work of increasing tbe size of the water mains in Norwood Road and Beresford Street be gone on with in accordance with the engineer's report, an amendment by the Mayor that particulars of urgent cases in other parts of the borough be first obtained, being defeated. Cartage Costs.—The question of the council purchasing at least one motor lorry .in order to save heavy cartage fAes was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee, it being stated that recently the council paid over £400 for one month's cartage costs.
