DUMP FOR TAKAPUNA.

* OBJECTIONS OF RESIDENTS. HEALTH MENACE ALLEGED. A strong protest against the intention of the Takapuna Borough Council to establish an incinerator for the disposal of rubbish, .and a temporary sanitation dump at the foot of Dominion Street, ■was expressed by a deputation which waited on the council last evening. Speaking in support of a petition, signed by over fifty residents. Father Holbrook* said that he was representing Bishop Cleary and the Roman Catholic Orphanage. By carrying out their proposal to establish the dump the council ! ■would be doing a great wrong to. thp j sisters and boys of the orphanage. Sixty I children were "at present at the institu- I tion, and accommodation was available J for twice that number. The orphanage j was responsible for the lives of tho?e j children. The council were about to | establish a sanitation dump within a | stone's throw of the children"? playground. The dump, he said, would be a : breeding ground for all kinds of germs, j and the flies would be a menace to public : health. The speaker was of the opinion . that' no amount of expert treatment j could make up for the objections to the ! dump. '. ' Mr. E. G. Tucker voiced a pro'est on ! behalf of all residents of the district ' concerned. Within a short period the borough's sewerage system would be in operation, and it was desirous that any new dump should be clear of the resi- j dential area of the borough. Other members of the deputation also ' spoke in strong terms against tiie pro- ' posal. i The Mayor (Mr. J. D. Morison) : informed the deputation that the council had given the matter lengthy consideration, and that the site had been chosen after much deliberation with the Health Department. Dr. Chesson had himself ; inspected the site. The incinerator! would certainly be erected in the i loea-lity. and the sanitation dump would j be in existence for only a comparatively I short period. The council had been eoni- j pelled to select a new site owing to the < action of the Health Department, and it had been known that objections would be raised to whatever locality was chosen. If he thought the dump would in any degree endanger the health of the children of the district he would certainty j be against it. j Following further discussion, the I council decided to meet Dr. Chesson on the site this morning to further consider the question. j
