SPEED BOAT IN FLAMES.
MISS DEVONPORT'S BAD LUCK. I Ju-t when she was engaged in a most I thrilling race yesterday, with the Baby Dev. rlosc at hand, the speed-boat. Miss Devonport. which shot ahead from the start., caught fire in the fourth lap.- The flames were quickly suppressed, but the incident spoilt the good. chances of the boat. The accident was caused by the exhaust pipe blowing off, the flames from the exhaust setting the carburettor on fire. They quickly spread and the large benzine tank was in dajiger of exploding. The sight of the flames drew two Jocal launches alongside, but their extinguishers had no effect on the flames. The launch Jean, owned by Mr. J. Harrison, of Whangarei, then came to the rescue and, her fire extinguisher working well, the .flames were subdued after which Jean tawed the luckless boat to her moorings off Devonport.
