TAXING THE MOTORIST.
ONE-THIRD OF CAR'S VALUE PAID. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) j HAMILTON, this day. I There is no country pays more in motor taxation than New Zealand, stated the vice-president of the Hamilton Automobilo Association at the monthly meeting last evening. Dr. Waddell said that motorists paid something like 33 1-3 per cent of the value of their cars in taxes, and yet received only 5 per cent back in reading improvements and maintenance. He held the view that as in other countries taxation should lie paid into a fund which would be used for improving tho roads. Strong objection was taken by other speakers to the often heard statement that motorists were not paying their fair share. Dr. Waddell mentioned that his last car had cost him no less than £150 in taxation before ever he put a foot inside it. Advocacy of a round table conference with local Parliamentary representatives, with a. view to obtaining adjustment of the present conditions was expressed by Mr. J. W. Hodd, and it was resolved to act upon the suggestion. |
