VICTORIA RACING CLUB. MANFRED WINS THE DERBY. PILLIEWINKIE THE STAKES. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) MELBOURNE. November 1. The Victorian Racing Club's Spring Meeting opened at Flemington yesterday in weather fully in keeping with the season. The Governor-General, Lord Stonehaven, and the Governors of three States of tne Commonwealth, present. A number of New Zealanders' and many visitors from overseas were included in the assemblage, which was very large. The race track was in capital order and fast records were a feature of the racing. The New South Wales colt Rampion, who won the Breeders' Plate, at Randwick last month led the field home in the Maribyrnong Plate, and thus retains an unbeaten cer-, titicate. Rampion won his race in easy style, and beat the best Flemington record for the distance by half a second. The value of the first prize in the dlaribyrnong Plate waß 30048.

The New Zealand-bred gelding PiUiewinkie scored a brilliant victory in the Melbourne Stakes. He was in last place entering the straight, but making up bis ground in fins style, he disposed of the opposition. The imported horse Pantheon, "ho finished second, looked like a winner in the straight. Windbag lost a couple or lengths at the post and came home in third Place. Pilliewinkie and his jockey, George Young, were loudly cheered on returning to the enclosure. S. Cracknell, the rider ot Pantheon, was cautioned for crossipg "Whittier in the straight. The field for the Victoria Derby numbered seven. Manfred registered a runaway win. nnd the time (2.31_) constitutes a record for the Flemington race. The victory of Manfred was very popular. Mr. »• Chaffey, who owns Manfred, furnished the winner of the V.R.C. Derby in 1922 with Wbittier. Frank Dempsey, who rode Manfred in to-day's race, stated that the colt was bouncy at the start, but he always had the race won. In the decision of the Cantala Stakes Waranton was always in command, and he defeated the fast-finishing pair Baldwin and Fuji San. King of Mirth was second early in the contest for the Hotham Handicap. He took the lead in the straight and won easily, giving F. Dempsey his second win during the afternoon. DETAILS OF THE RACING. Ethelton, Amounis, Belgamba following in that order. Manfred was first into the straight, and the favourite, romping away, won by twelve lengths from Belgamba, with Hampden two' lengths away, third. Amounis was fourth. Manacre fifth, Ethelton sixth, and Petunia last. Tluie, 2.31& (race record and equal to the Flemington record for the distance).
