FOR THE ZOO.
ARRIVALS BY THE SUSSEX. A MIXED SHIPMENT. Another consignment'of animals and birds for the Auckland Zoological Park arrived at Auckland by the Federal steamer Sussex from Calcutta. The steamer reached port late last night and berthed this morning at the Prince's wharf, the animals and birds being landed early this afternoon. From the wharf they were taken to the zoo by motor lorry. The new arrivals consist of twenty-" live rhesus monkeys, one female leopard, a pair of nilgai (which are the largest of the antelope species found in India), two pairs of peacocks and fifty chukors, or Indian hill partridges. All animals and birds are in good condition after their long sea voyage. Two peacocks, one monkey, and three partridges died on their way to New Zealand. During the voyage one of the monkeys escaped from its cage and sought refuge in the ship's engine room. For some days it evaded all attempts at its capture, but was finally cornered and returned to its box. When caught the monkey boasted a coat that was entirely black. •
